Frequently Asked Questions
What is memory care?
Memory care is specialized senior living designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
How is memory care different from assisted living?
Unlike assisted living communities, Artis focuses solely on memory care, providing dementia-specific programming, dementia-trained caregivers, and environments designed for cognitive support and emotional well-being.
Residents enjoy the freedom to experience the entire community — not just a hallway, floor, or unit — encouraging connection, engagement, and a greater sense of independence. Every day, our associates provide the reminders, encouragement, patience, and personalized support that help residents feel successful, confident, and valued.
What dementia diagnoses are supported at Artis?
At Artis, we don’t define or label residents by a diagnosis. We recognize that each person’s experience is unique, and that the same diagnosis can present very differently from one individual to another. Our approach focuses on understanding each resident’s strengths, preferences, and needs so we can provide truly personalized support.
That said, we care for residents living with a wide range of dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease dementia, Huntington’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and other forms of cognitive impairment.
When should someone move to memory care?
When safety, routine, or caregiver well-being become difficult to maintain at home. Here are five important factors to assess when considering memory care:
Safety – Is your loved one’s home no longer safe for them? Are there fall hazards like stairs, rugs, or large furniture? Have they accidentally left kitchen appliances on or open?
Health – Is your loved one’s health at risk? Are symptoms such as incontinence, dehydration, anxiety, malnutrition, aggression, or wandering becoming too challenging for you to manage alone?
Physical Dependence – Have your loved one’s care needs progressed beyond your physical abilities? Are they becoming increasingly dependent on you for help with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, bathing, using the restroom, and transferring to and from bed?
Social Isolation – Are concerns for their safety and basic care needs keeping them from connecting with family and friends, and doing things that bring them joy?
Your Own Health & Life – Are you becoming a stressed, irritable, and impatient caregiver? Do you feel depressed or overwhelmed, or have trouble sleeping? Are you struggling to meet your work and family responsibilities, as well as your social life and self-care needs?
How does Artis protect residents from wandering?
The community is enclosed with decorative fencing and exits are secured. Continuous walking paths and visual cues support safe exploration throughout the community.
Does memory care improve quality of life?
Structured routines, social interaction and engagement that aligns to residents’ familiarity and interests often reduce stress and isolation.
Can couples remain connected?
Yes, spouses may stay as involved their loved one’s caregiving as they like. Our goal is to protect your relationship and support both of you. Partners are encouraged to join music and entertainment programs, art classes and learning opportunities, exercise and outdoor experiences. Join your spouse for meals with your spouse anytime, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, favorite foods and family traditions. Artis also offers monthly family support groups, ongoing guidance from a team experienced in dementia care, and practical advice for meaningful visits.
Are programs adapted for cognitive ability?
Programs are tailored to each resident’s strengths. We engage residents in specialized programs and therapies designed to stimulate cognitive function and promote emotional well-being, including music and art therapy, memory-enhancing exercises and games, reminiscence therapy, and sensory stimulation exercises.
Is memory care only for late-stage dementia?
No. People at many stages of the dementia journey live at Artis and benefit from care and life enrichment tailored to their needs as they evolve.
How do families start the transition?
Artis partners with families through education, communication, emotional support, and personalized care planning from move-in through every stage of dementia. The Artis team coordinates closely with the referring partner and the family to ensure smooth transitions into the community. The Director of Community Integration is focused entirely on ensuring residents are welcomed with intention, care plans are aligned holistically across disciplines, families are communicated with proactively, and Artis associates are supported with robust dementia education from day one.
