A Visitor’s Guide to Memory Care Communities
A Visitor’s Guide to Memory Care Communities
Helping Every Visit Feel Comfortable, Respectful, and Meaningful

Visiting an Artis memory care community can be a deeply meaningful experience. Residents living with dementia experience the world differently, but they continue to feel connection, kindness, humor, and warmth. This guide offers a few simple tips to help visitors interact in ways that support dignity, comfort, and positive moments for everyone in the community.
1. Start with Warmth
Approach residents with a smile and gentle eye contact. Even when memory changes, people still recognize kindness and emotional tone.
2. Introduce Yourself Simply
Use a short, friendly introduction.
Example:
“Hi Mary, my name is Susan. I’m visiting today.”
Keeping introductions simple helps residents feel comfortable without needing to process too much information.
3. Speak Slowly and Clearly
Use calm, everyday language and give residents time to respond. Avoid asking multiple questions at once.
4. Avoid Testing Memory
Questions like “Do you remember me?” can create stress. Instead, simply say: “It’s good to see you today.” This helps keep interactions relaxed and positive.
5. Meet Residents Where They Are
If a resident says something that isn’t factually correct, it’s often best not to correct them. Instead, respond to the feeling behind what they’re saying.
Example:
Resident: “I need to go to work.”
Visitor: “You must have worked very hard. What kind of work did you enjoy?”
6. Be Patient with Repeated Questions
Residents may ask the same question multiple times because their brain may not store the answer. The best approach is patience and reassurance.
Helpful tips:
- Answer calmly each time
- Keep responses short
- Gently redirect the conversation when helpful
Example:
Resident: “When am I going home?”
Visitor: “You’re safe here today. We’re enjoying some time together.”
Even if the answer isn’t remembered, the feeling of reassurance often is.
7. Ask Feeling-Based Questions
Questions that invite emotion or simple conversation work best.
Examples:
- “What kind of music do you enjoy?”
- “Do you like being outside?”
- “What made you smile today?”
8. Respect Personal Space
Approach residents from the front and observe body language. Some residents enjoy touch, while others may prefer more space. When unsure, an associate can help guide you.
9. Follow the Lead of the Care Team
Our associates know residents’ routines, preferences, and comfort levels. If you’re unsure how to help or interact, feel free to ask them. They are wonderful partners in creating a positive experience.
10. Appreciate the Small Moments
In memory care, meaningful connection often happens in simple ways—a shared laugh, a smile, holding a hand, or a brief conversation. Taking a moment to slow down and be present can create moments of joy and connection that matter deeply.
