Rochelle, also known as Safta (grandma) to 8 grandchildren, is about 5 feet of spirit and affection. Friends who have known her for years talk about her energy and generosity. Rochelle’s favorite pastime is walking with her husband, Helmut, who said their goal is to make the carpets threadbare. Helmut talks of Rochelle’s keen intellect. She skipped a grade in high school and earned her Master’s degree in speech and hearing in record time. Rochelle loved teaching math at all levels but most especially at the college level. If you put the words, family, holiday and party together, guaranteed Mary will be in the midst of the celebration. Mary and her husband, Joseph (note their names) loved making Christmas special, especially for their grandchildren. Christmas Eve was the most important part of their celebration as Mary and Joseph prepared the traditional Italian feast of the seven fishes together. What makes this post even more special is that Joe was part of our Artis family a few years ago. Marianne is a seamstress and artist. She sewed her own wedding dress and ski outfits, as well as the gigantic stocking for the Christmas parade (pictured). As an elementary school teacher, she painted a portrait of each student in her class every year. At Artis Marianne enjoys participating in art projects.
