Once you’ve decided it’s best to move your loved one to memory care and you’ve chosen a community, it’s time to decide what to bring. While there’s no getting around the fact that packing can be painful, approaching it with the right mindset – and a good checklist – can help you do so thoughtfully and confidently. Here’s a guide to essential items that can help ease the transition and create a comfortable, familiar environment in your loved one’s new home.

1. Important Documents

Gather personal identification documents, medical records, insurance information, emergency contact list and legal documents. Note these won’t be kept in your loved one’s suite, the community will need them on file for various medical, insurance and administrative uses.

2. Comfortable Clothing and Shoes

Pack their favorite outfits for the current and upcoming seasons, including day-to-day clothes, sleepwear (and slippers!), and special occasions. If the weather gets cool, be sure to pack a coat and hat to encourage time outdoors and community outings.

3. Familiar Bedding and Linens

There’s nothing like sleeping on your own pillow. Bring it along with familiar bedding and linens from home to provide a sense of comfort and familiarity and create a cozy sleep environment.

4. Toiletries and Personal Care Items

Pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and skincare products. Include any other personal care items that are part of their daily routine.

5. Assistive Devices and Medical Equipment

Bring glasses, hearing aids, mobility devices and other medical equipment and supplies your loved one needs – of course!

6. Favorite Books, Music and Games

Whether it’s Harper Lee or the Grateful Dead, favorite books and songs soothe the soul. Keeping these at hand can provide comfort, relaxation, and engagement.

7. Family Photos and Keepsakes

Bring family photos, keepsakes, and other sentimental items. These personal touches can evoke positive feelings and create a sense of home in their new environment.

8. Communication Devices

Consider packing a device like a phone or tablet for staying connected with loved ones.

9. Snacks and Favorite Treats

Are Life Savers Gummies their favorite? Pack ‘em. nutritious snacks and favorite treats that align with dietary preferences and restrictions. These familiar foods can provide comfort and enjoyment.

10. Comfort Items and Personal Touches

Include comfort items such as a favorite throw or knickknack that hold sentimental value. These personal touches can make the living space feel more personalized and comforting.
